GOING THROUGH A ROUNDABOUT

Rotaries (roundabouts) present riders with many challenges and risks.

Any vehicles within the rotary have the right of way. The ride leader and other cyclists must yield until the lane is clear.
Cycling through Roundabouts

There are a couple options for navigating a rotary:

  • The first is to use the sidewalks and cross using pedestrian lanes. Yellow path on the drawing above.
  • The second option is to “take the lane” similar to left turns. Red path on the drawing above.
In other words:
  • Well in advance of the rotary, the ride leader should signal for a lane change (similar to a left turn).
  • NO ONE leaves the safety of the bike lane (in red).
  • The last rider(s) now takes over the maneuver by calling TAKING THE LANE or CAR BACK/ HOLD THE LANE until the traffic has cleared.
  • If only some of the riders enter the rotary due to traffic, the ride leader slows down on the other side of the rotary and waits until the group is all together.
